Europe’s Futures
Europe’s Futures is a network of renowned academics, activists and journalists aiming to advance new perspectives for a unified, democratic Europe.
The »Europe’s Futures« programme, directed by IWM permanent fellow Ivan Vejvoda, aims at gathering thought leaders and supporting them in their research and policy analysis in order to advance new perspectives for a unified, democratic Europe. At its core, the initiative addresses challenges facing European democracy, values and institutions, benefiting policymakers, academics and civil society by offering fresh insights into Europe’s evolving socio-political landscape.
Through its fellowship programme, which to date has hosted 48 fellows across six annual cohorts, Europe’s Futures has cultivated a body of work that leads and informs both public and policy discourse. It has influenced the future of Europe in critical issues such as democratic deficits, responses to refugee crises, and foreign policy matters such as EU enlargement and transatlantic relations.
Since 2018, we have jointly managed and curated Europe’s Futures together with the Institute of Human Sciences (IWM), creating a collaborative space that draws on each institution’s strengths in fostering intellectual discourse and impactful research. Together, we oversee the project’s scope, fellow selection and focus areas. This partnership also extends to managing a network of alumni who continue to engage with European issues beyond their fellowship.
Established as Europe faced rising challenges to its democratic order, the programme’s mission continues to grow in importance. Today, Europe’s Futures constitutes a vital resource for understanding and addressing key issues shaping Europe’s future, with an extensive collection of works accessible to the public here. This joint initiative not only strengthens cross-disciplinary dialogue but also reaffirms our commitment to shaping a resilient and democratic Europe for all.
