Felwine Sarr
How can we realise a holistic concept of prosperity for the many, not the few?
As we celebrate 200 years of the savings bank model in Austria, we understand that providing savings accounts to citizens in the fast-changing 19th century was as audacious as it proved sustainable. ERSTE Foundation started as a social business. The savings bank was inclusive in scope and conservative in risk. It turned into a pillar of the European model of empowerment and wellbeing of the many.
How can we realise a holistic concept of prosperity for all today? What will be private and what will be public goods, services, institutions but also responsibilities? How can we lead the profound transformations ahead of us – on climate, technology and on living together – and get those transformations right? Who will forge new alliances of responsibility? Audacity of initiative is what we now need.
On 27 November, we welcome Felwine Sarr, Professor of Economics at Gaston Berger University in Saint-Louis, Senegal. His recent book, Afrotopia, presents a holistic approach to economic and cultural interaction, or rather, the cultural foundations of economic choices. Felwine Sarr will deliver the last lecture of The ERSTE Foundation Tipping Point Talks following Francis Fukuyama, Timothy Snyder and Marietje Schaake. Felwine Sarr’s lecture will be followed by a stage conversation with Christoph Badelt, Sergiu Manea, Shalini Raderia, Felwine Sarr and Sigrid Stagl.
