“As a child, I vividly remember the joy of gazing into a kaleidoscope as the tiny colored shards rearranged into newer and newer shapes by rattling or turning the device. At times, when looking through the mirrors built into the kaleidoscope, in addition to the eye-catching mosaics created from the fragments, it almost seemed as if new shards of various shapes and colors were mysteriously born there. A more adult version of the beautyscope – as the kaleidoscope is also often called – is the optical one, the teleidoscope. It does not offer a view of beads or plastic fragments but allows one to observe the world through a glass ball or lens, providing a disintegrated image of the surroundings, that changes depending on what and from what distance we look through the beautyscope. I find this version less comforting, but honest. It makes us think about how many versions of the world we live in and what they consist of.

I like to think of the POV YOLO WIP TBA exhibition as a kaleidoscope. Through it, we try to construct a layered and variable image of the Intermedia Studio of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design. Similar to that miraculous optical device, at the studio we are constantly negotiating between the collectivity of the whole and the individuality of the shards. We observe thoughts, opinions, ideas, interests, themes, and artistic practices as they connect and reconnect, build new coalitions and on the contrary, divide and counter each other. They simply rearrange themselves into new combinations and show specific images of the world in which we live from different angles.

The exhibition has three thematic editions and consists of several interacting sections. The central space with expositions, the study room, is a community place for meeting, spending time, for debates, consultations, presentations and parties; it also hosts various artistic interventions. In the entrance area and the back room, there are two separate exhibition projects that arose from an open call addressed to students and graduates over the summer. They were arranged in such a way that they either complemented each other or created an interesting thematic, aesthetic or material tension. The room opening onto the courtyard hosts a curated video section of the exhibition compiled from the studio’s archive of video works.”

The first exhibition mosaic is dedicated to life in late capitalism, particularly to the relationship between bodies, labor, lifestyle, and the formation of self-image and identity which are heavily influenced by commercialized social networks consolidated and monopolized under large capitalist Meta-type platforms, as well as by the onset of the 4.0 smart web and generally accessible online artificial intelligence tools. In this hybrid world, it is no longer possible to separate the mutual merging and overlap of digital and physical environments. In a world full of an endless flow of fragmented content, contemporary art often stands in the middle of an aesthetic flirtation between the digital and the material, and shows the ambivalence and complexity of the relationship between humans and digital technology.
