Call: Award for sensitive poverty reporting

FROM

09/10/17

UNTIL

31/10/17

EAPN Austria Awards the Prize for Journalism “from below” also in 2017. People in poverty evaluate contributions.

For the eight time, EAPN Austria (Die Armutskonferenz or Poverty Conference) will award a prize for sensitive and in-depth media reporting on poverty. Reports that have been published in Austrian media (print, online, radio and TV) are eligible for entry. People experiencing poverty will evaluate and select the submissions. Entries can be submitted up to 31 October 2017.

The people behind the statistics and numbers in general rarely fit the stereotypes that are all too readily used in public discourse: The Poverty Conference seeks to support a style of journalism that does justice to the various facets of poverty, treats those affected by it with respect, makes their voices heard and their realities visible, and sheds light on backgrounds.

To be eligible for submission reports of any length must have been published or broadcast in an Austrian medium (categories including print media, online media, radio and TV) between November 2016 and October 2017. All entries submitted by 31 October will be evaluated by a jury of people experiencing poverty who are connected on the Poverty Conference platform “Becoming Visible”.

The best reports in each category will be honoured during the award ceremony at the Presseclub Concordia in Vienna on 18 December 2017.

Supported by ERSTE Foundation, the concept of the Prize for Journalism “from below” has been “exported” as an international good practice example to other European countries. The prize was awarded last year for the first time in Hungary, Croatia, Iceland and Finland, with Serbia, Romania and Macedonia to follow this year.
