Debating Europe
Americans go to the polls in November to elect a new president. Or rather an old president for the second time. Incumbent Joe Biden boasts an impressive economic record but has been less assured handling the dramatic and violent events overseas, notably the Russo-Ukrainian war and the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Former president, Donald Trump, dominates the Republican Party in Congress but is battling several civil and criminal court cases.
Europe looks on nervously at this battle of the gerontocrats: The decision in the USA will have a massive impact on the debates in the EU on future defence policy, trade policy and climate policy. April’s Debating Europe event at the Burgtheater brings together leading policy makers and scholars from America and Europe to assess the prospects for the election, and the impact of its possible outcomes on Europe, Ukraine and the Middle East.
