A Speech to Europe 2025: Lea Ypi

May 15, 2025
Judenplatz, Vienna

The lecture series A Speech to Europe delivers critical input on the present and future of Europe. Held in Vienna’s Judenplatz, its location serves as a reminder that Europe can only be understood against the background of its history.

This year, Albanian-British political scientist and philosopher Lea Ypi will give the Speech to Europe. Ypi’s research interests include democracy and migration. Her award-winning memoir Free has been translated into over thirty-five languages and gained international acclaim; it is a personal and philosophical reflection on freedom, identity and the challenges of political change.

Initiated in 2019 by ERSTE Foundation, this is a joint event with our partners Wiener Festwochen and the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM), in cooperation with the Jewish Museum Vienna.

The speech will be held in English.
This event is free of charge and takes place outdoors at the Judenplatz.
A livestream will be available.
