Zenica’s Association of Paraplegics and People Suffering from Childhood -Paralysis fights against access barriers in the public domain – barriers which have the same effect as locked doors on people in wheelchairs and on people who have difficulty walking. The barriers are equally a restriction to the freedom of movement of mothers with babies in prams and people with impaired vision or hearing. Of the 26,000 inhabitants of the Zenica-Doboj canton, 6,500 fall into one of these groups.
The bulk of the Association’s work has concentrated on its struggle for the implementation in Zenica of a series of 2004 laws: the Regulations on Spatial Standards, on PlanningTechnical Conditions and on Norms for Preventing the Creation of all Obstacles for People with Decreased Physical Abilities. By late 2007, the project had already achieved one of its main goals: All wheelchair-users in the city of Zenica now have access ramps which enable them to leave their homes and return to them without any outside help. In addition, the city promenade is now fully accessible to wheelchair-users, and a considerable number of public buildings have been equipped with access ramps and/or lifts.
